Wilson Canyon

Located between Yerington, NV and Wellington, NV, Wilson Canyon is a dramatic natural cut through the heart of a desert mountain range, made by the West Walker River in northwest Nevada. It contains a rich & beautiful juxtaposition of Great Basin wilderness, verdant river habitat & an artist's palette of colorful cliffs & hills. It's also one of the few places for many miles around where the public has access to the West Walker River. |

Over the past few years Wilson Canyon has become more popular than ever as a place to camp, fish, hike, picnic and ride off-highway vehicles (OHV). With this increased use has come increased pressure on the natural resources of the area, particularly the Walker River corridor. Vegetation has been destroyed and soils have eroded and washed into the river. In cooperation with other federal and state agencies, Lyon County and citizen groups, the BLM will be fencing and signing along the bed and banks of the river in the near future. Pedestrian access to the river will continue, however, in order to protect this fragile resource motorized vehicles and camping will not be allowed inside the fence. |

| It is good to see that efforts to maintain this beautiful area are underway. I makes for a lovely ride. We plan on stopping here for a picnic lunch on our next trip to Lake Tahoe. |
Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant

 08/23/2009 - Today we went with our neighbor Marc to the Sunday Jazz Brunch at the French restaurant located halfway up the Eiffel Tower at Paris, Paris Casino on the Strip. Though a little expensive, it was very good. Connie had a pounded, crusted pan fried chicken breast with potatoes A gratin, I had a delicious pan fried rainbow trout and Marc had the Seafood Salad with lobster, crab and shrimp that looked absolutely delicious. We then shared apple strudel and probably the best Crème Brule I've ever had. The female jazz singer, backed by a two piece combo was excellent. The views included the new City Center project and the Dancing Fountains at the Bellagio. It was a lovely brunch. Afterwards, we all went to Green Valley Ranch for some poker and slot play. I ended up the big winner, picking up enough to pay for lunch and pay for Connie's slot losses. |

Hoover Dam Bridge

We know that we have taken many of you who’ve visited us to the Hoover Dam and thought you might be interested in this update. Due to the increased security problems since 911 and increased traffic in general, they are building a new “by-pass” bridge over the gorge just south of the dam. Started in 2005, we have even followed its progress on a couple of shows that I think were on the Discovery Channel. As you can see from this photo, it is really taking shape. Suspended 900ft above the mighty Colorado River – the two sides of the 300 million dollar bridge are about to meet. The bridge will carry a new section of US Route 93 past the bottleneck of the old road which can be seen twisting and winding around and across the dam itself. When complete, it will provide a new link between the states of Nevada and Arizona . |
The arches are made up of 53 individual sections – each 24ft long – which have been cast on-site and are being lifted into place using an improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary steel pylons. The arches will eventually measure more than 1,000ft across. At the moment, the structure looks like a traditional suspension bridge. But once the arches are complete, the suspending cables on each side will be removed. |
Extra vertical columns will then be installed on the arches to carry the road. The bridge has become known as the Hoover Dam bypass, although it is officially called the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, after a former governor of Nevada and an American Football player from Arizona who joined the US Army and was killed in Afghanistan. Work on the bridge started in 2005 and should finish next year. An estimated 17,000 cars and trucks will cross it every day. The dam was started in 1931 and used enough concrete to build a road from New York to San Francisco. The stretch of water it created, Lake Mead, is 110 miles long and took six years to fill. The original road was opened at the same time as the famous dam in 1936. |

We try to get a few pictures whenever we travel about. Because this is a blog it is difficult to place postings in any meaningful order, so I will try it by by tagging them within this introduction. In March of 2009 we took the Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. At the rim we visited the Hopi House and several other structures built along the Rim. Prior to going to Williams, Az. to catch the train, we made a visit to Sedona, Az., a lovely town stuck in the middle of the largest Ponderosa Forest in the country.
On our regular visits to Laughlin, Nevada, we often like to stop at the Boulder Dam Motel for lunch in Boulder City. Sometimes we head over the Boulder Dam directly to Kingman, Arizona, where we always stop for lunch at Mr. D's Diner. On one trip last year we visited the world famous London Bridge located at Lake Havasu, Az.
We visited several places in and around the Las Vegas and the surrounding area during 2008 year, including places such as the old mining town of Rhyolite, NV., and Scotty's Castle in Death Valley.

The Grand Canyon – South Rim

| We just arrived back from our three-day trip to the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate very well. It was beautiful the day before and after, but the actual day of our train ride to the canyon it was cold, windy and very cloudy. In spite of it all we still got some great pictures and can't wait to go back for another visit. Here is a picture of the first view we saw as we walked to the edge of the rim. Pictures seem to be inadequate in displaying the depth and expanse of such a view. | |

Welcome to our favorite 60’s diner. We actually heard about this place on TV one night and decided that we had to go see it. Well, now we’ve been there at least four times. We’ve been there by ourselves and once with our friend and neighbor, Marc Resnic. It is located on old Route 66 in Kingman, Arizona. If you’re ever in the area, it is a must stop for lunch.

This free exhibition, which ended in May of 2008, presented 37 treasured masterpieces of various artists using the styles of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. We attended with our neighbor Marc.
